Domain Name Server system is a must necessary, because the domain names (e.g., Domain.com) are easier for people to remember instead of IP addresses.

What is a Domain Name Server (DNS)?

A Domain Name Server refers to a system that can be used to maintain a directory of domain names and instantly translate those domain names into Internet Protocol addresses. A Domain Name Server system is necessary because domain names (e.g., Domain.com) are easier for people to remember than IP addresses.

DNS is a protocol used to exchange data between the Internet and private networks, or you can call it the TCP/IP protocol suite. Whether browsing a website or sending an email, the DNS is there to help you translate the domain name you’re trying to connect.

How to change a Domain Name Server?

Most personal bloggers or small business website owners are unfamiliar with a Domain Name Server or are unsure how to change a Domain Name Server. As a matter of fact, if you’ve touched the Internet, you’ve probably used the Domain Name System (DNS) without realizing it.

Generally speaking, you have 2 options to edit the DNS: 1st, you can change the Domain Name Server with your domain name registrar; 2nd, if you’ve pointed the Nameservers to your hosting provider, then you can log in to your hosting control panel to edit the DNS. Here, I’d like to give you an example of how to change the DNS using the HostGator control panel because those guys currently host our website.

  • 1st, please login your billing account via “https://portal.hostgator.com/login” and access the cPanel hosting control panel.
  • 2nd, go to “Simple DNS Zone Editor” under “Domains,” then select the domain name you want to edit.
  • 3rd, once you’ve selected the domain name, 2 text lines will be displayed below: Add an A Record and a CNAME Record.
  • 4th, just enter your domain “A Record” or “CNAME Record” in the text line. That’s it!

Note: If you’re unfamiliar with how to edit DNS, please don’t hesitate to contact your hosting providers for assistance. Once you’ve entered the wrong domain, “A Record” or “CNAME Record”, your website is probably not working absolutely.
